First Anniversary

We celebrated our one-year anniversary this last Saturday night (today is our actual anniversary) by going out to Ruth's Chris steakhouse by Centennial Olympic Park in downtown Atlanta. Forgive the crappy cell phone pics below--we forgot to bring our regular digital camera along--but I thought these would be better than nothing.

Here we are, waiting to go in:

This next pic needs a little explanation. It's of me making some alterations to my shoe, which had broken before I walked into the restaurant (that'll teach me to buy from Payless). Using a pair of scissors I bummed off of one of the backoffice folks at Ruth's Chris, I just snipped the back straps off both shoes, converting them from slingbacks to mules, so that I wouldn't look like a total freak walking around later on. Thank goodness we were pretty much alone in the restaurant, so no one else noticed my strange little project.

The food was absolutely amazing. If you've ever been to this restaurant, you know what I'm talking about. We both ordered steaks that you could cut with a butter knife, and shared an order some steak fries between us. And while we ate, we enjoyed a tremendous view of Centennial Olympic Park from where we sat. We even got to see two just-married couples have their wedding photos taken amongst the greenery, which totally took us back to our own wedding day. It seems like it was just yesterday!
Then, at the end of the meal, this showed up at our table (cute, huh?):

FYI, it was bread pudding with apples and raisins in it. The best ever! After dessert, we strolled out through the back of the restaurant, and took a (very short! It was freezing cold out) walk in the park, which was all decorated for Christmas. We did not get any photos of this due to the crappiness of the photographic device we were using, but I stole some off of flickr.com to give you an idea of what it looked like:

Pretty, no? Then we hopped in the car and called it a night so that we could go home and enjoy some egg nog and a movie at home. It was a simple but romantic evening, planned exclusively by Aaron, and it reminded me of the night we got engaged. It was a lot of fun thinking back on the last twelve months, reflecting on all the highs and lows and all that we learned about ourselves and our marriage. It's truly been a great run so far, and we're both eager to see what the coming years bring.

Thanksgiving Recap

I recently returned from a trip home to VA for Thanksgiving and am pleased to report that it was a blast! I had the opportunity to do some serious catching up with friends and family, and of course, there was amazing food to be had.

On my way up, I was able to stop in North Carolina to see my friend Holly, who I haven't seen in 11 years. We were best friends from fourth grade thru the eighth grade, and succeeded in keeping in touch for a few years afterwards, but lost track of each other completely during our early college years. A few months ago, though, we were able to find each other on Facebook, at which time I was delighted to hear that she had relocated to the south, so I ever-so-politely invited myself to stop by on my way up north. She agreed, and so that's just what I did! It was great to chat over all times and get the scoop on all the current goings-on in her life. I even got to meet her husband-to-be, Justin, who was super nice and a total riot.

I also got to see my friend Grace, who, although she was deathly ill, managed to summon the strength to allow me to bring her Indian food. ;o) It was fun chatting with her before she had a chance to skip town for the holiday as well.

A couple of days before Thanksgiving, my mom and I made a mad dash up to Amish country (Intercourse, PA) where we picked up a couple of turkeys that she had ordered at the farmer's market (for $70!! Who knew turkeys could be so expensive?!). We shopped for other goodies, like homemade sausage, cheese, the biggest head of cauliflower I've ever seen, and the tiniest and tenderest bunch of asparagus I've ever tasted. (And we may or may not have thrown back a baked good or too while we were at it... namely a whoopie pie and a pumpkin donut. Mmm!)

Then we dashed back to Virginia and started the cooking and cleaning process in preparation for all the rest of our guests that were soon to arrive. And then they did, in a utter flood. My lil' bro, Jake arrived with his wife, Jenna, and then my Uncle Dave, Aunt Regina, and their 3 year-old daughter, Helen came the day before the big day. And, of course, we were also joined by my sister Amy and her hubby who are currently living with my mom. Not to mention a whole passel of cousins. Needless to say, we had a full house, but thanks to my mom's tireless efforts, there was an abundance of food for everyone. We did some fun family things, too, like going on scenic walks at Great Falls and near the old Lorton prison. My mom sure does like her walks. But I can't say no because Thanksgiving coincides with her birthday, and that's always her special b-day request.

No trip would be complete either without seeing my good buddy, Kim. The night before I left to go back home to Georgia, I drove up to Maryland to hang out with her, her hubby Jason, and the happiest baby in the world (their completely adorable 8-month old daughter, Berkeley). I had such a good time playing with the Berkster--she is hilarious. She thinks she is a little doggie. She sticks out her little tongue and pants, and carries her pacifier around sideways in her mouth like a chewtoy. I'm going to miss those guys so much when they move to Utah!

And then... I made the arduous trek home. Now, this is normally a ten-hour drive--under GOOD conditions. However, I chose to leave on the Sunday after Thanksgiving, and it was rainy. Needless to say, it got ugly. There were two instances of roadwork that set me back about an hour each, plus a couple of accidents caused by the slick roads. Not to mention the fact that I very nearly had one of my own. During the last leg of my trip, I was seriously hauling butt, because I was on my 13th hour on the road and just wanted to get home and go to bed. Suddenly, I found myself in a lane where there was a truck with his emergency flashers on, chugging along at a solid 15 MPH. I had to slam on my brakes SUPER HARD (don't you hate the noise that that makes? Seriously, it's the worst.) and barely kept from hitting him. It was scary. Shortly thereafter, however, I found myself safe in the arms of my dear hubby and all was well.

Overall, I'd say it was a fairly successful trip. And I'm glad to be back home!

Okay, okay... ;o)

By popular demand (of two whole people), here is an blog update for you. Let's see... what's been going on... I am trying to get my act together with my new callings as Enrichment Committee member and leader of our ward's cooking group.

This month, I was put in charge of making arrangements for the nursery on Enrichment Night, which involved recruiting some Young Women to watch the anklebiters and planning a snack and an activity for said anklebiters to do while waiting for their mommies to exhaust their creative juices and their need for gossip. :o) This seems like a fairly easy task, but I was mildly intimidated by it, since I've never done it before. With a little planning, however, everything seemed to fall into place pretty easily. On September 23rd, the night of Enrichment, I showed up to the activity to find that only one Young Woman showed up to man the nursery, so I then had to volunteer myself to take up the slack, which actually turned out to be a good thing, because I had a total blast! I wish I could have taken some pics, but alas, I don't think the mothers of the ward would necessarily approve of me posting photos of their kids on my personal blog anyway. But they were so dang cute and I had such a blast coloring with the little girls! As the official activity, however, I made some peanut butter playdough, which was a big hit. Here is the recipe, for anyone interested:

18-oz jar creamy peanut butter
6 tablespoons honey
3/4 cup non-fat dry milk (FYI, I added way more than this.)

Mix ingredients together, using varying amounts of dry milk for desired consistencies. Knead it with fingers, forming into desired shapes, adding other foods like M&M's, peanuts, marshmallows, or dried fruit for eyes, mouths, etc.

Anyway, so glad I can check that whole thing off my list. Next, though, comes the cooking group planning. I scrambled yesterday to recruit a sister in the ward to teach the lesson and another to host it at her house, so now we've got that settled. Sister Merrill will be teaching the sisters how to make homemade noodles, which (hopefully) should be interesting. How we're going to pull this off with a $10 budget, though, is another matter entirely... If y'all have any suggestions, I'm all ears.

Let's see... what else, what else? I've battling some pretty crazy migraines lately, as I have since I was 12, but they've been getting especially bad and causing me to miss work, so I knew I needed to finally listen to my mom and my husband and go see a doctor finally. So I did so exactly a week ago, and the doctor prescribed me some new medication that lowers my blood pressure, thus heading off migraines before they can begin. So far, it seems to be working pretty well. Not 100%, as I'm still having to supplement that with Advil, but at least I'm down to one dose per day (as opposed to the usual 2 or 3). The doctor also sent me to get a neck x-ray done, which showed that I have muscle spasms in my neck. He thought that that could be the cause of my headaches, so he referred me to a physical therapist, and I need to set up an appointment for that as well. I'm hoping and praying that this will help!

A big source of drama lately has been the gas shortage here in Georgia. I don't know what it's like in other states at the moment, but it is about reaching the crisis point now. Ever since Hurricane Ike down in Texas, we never know when and where to get gas. You can pass twelve gas stations and all of them will be out! Luckily I found some last week, which should last me through Friday, but after that, I don't know what I'm going to do. Part of the problem is that Georgia law requires that we have special low-emissions gas, so we can't just borrow gas from other states since their standards are different. Supposedly the state is going to lower their standards temporarily, but so far we haven't seen a change. My supervisors are considering letting some people start telecommuting from home a few days a week, which I think would be a huge blessing, so I'm crossing my fingers that I get chosen to do this.

That's all the news for now. Stay tuned, and I'll try to find some time to post some pics of our recent trip to Chattanooga, TN!

16. Smiled for no reason? Well, now that doesn't make any sense.

Memory Game

I don't think too many people read our blog at the moment, but I thought I'd post this and see if anything comes of it...

This is a fun, tag-gy type game! So, play along...Here are the directions: 1. As a comment on my blog, leave one memory that you and I had together. It doesn't matter if you knew me a little or a lot, anything you remember! 2. Next, re-post these instructions on your blog and see how many people leave a memory about you. It's actually pretty funny to see the responses. If you leave a memory about me, I'll assume you're playing the game and I'll come to your blog and leave one about you. If you don't want to play on your blog, or if you don't have a blog, I'll leave my memory of you in my comments.

Work Field Trip

I thought my field trip days were over once I graduated from high school. But to my surprise, I had the opportunity yesterday to go on one with my fellow co-workers at the KSU Library. And it was actually pretty fun! We went to the Southern Civil War and Locomotive Museum in Kennesaw, GA, pictured here:

We had a guided tour of the museum by a dude in full period costume who really knew his stuff. He was one of those really hardcore Civil War re-enactment buffs, and I don't think he took a single breath in the two-hours he talked to us. He told us all about the Great Locomotive Chase that took place when some Union spies traveled down South and stole a train and the Confederates chased them. They even had the original train that was stolen, called "The General":

They also had other cool artifacts like an old amputation kit. I've never seen a Civil War-era syringe before! I didn't even know they existed at that time. Turns out I was wrong.

Following our little excursion, we went down the road to the Old Mill Restaurant in Acworth, Now a fabulous dining spot, it was once an old flour mill built in 1873 by John Cowan, a former goldminer-turned-businessman. The mill has since been restored, but it still hints at its history with its rustic decor. And the food and ambiance was fabulous! I had salmon with cream sauce, mashed potatoes, and green beans, followed by a brownie sundae. It was really enjoyable to get to sit down with my co-workers and get to know them better.

All-in-all, a very enjoyable day! And now I know of two more places I can take friends and family should they ever decide to visit. ;o)

Getting to Know Us

What is your husband's name? ~ Aaron Wesley Murrietta

How long have you been together?~ We've known each other for 2 1/2 years, but have been married for almost 6 months.

How long did you date?~ We dated for about 15 months before we got engaged.

Who eats more?~ Definitely Aaron, but I'm not far behind him usually.

Who said, "I love you" first?~ Aaron did.

Who is taller?~ Aaron is 6'4", and I am 6'. (We definitely draw attention whenever we walk into a room, which both of us hate.)

Who has more speeding tickets?~ Uh, yeah, Aaron. I don't even want to go into it. Grrr...

Who is smarter?~ Me!!! No, really, it depends on the subject. I'm nerdy when it comes to literature, grammar, music, and pop culture, but Aaron is a hardcore history, political science, and car buff. But both of us totally suck at math. Our future children don't stand a chance in school once they get past 9th grade algebra.

Who is more sensitive?~ Hard to say. We both have pretty delicate egos. But Aaron gets over things faster (lucky for me... otherwise we might never be speaking to each other).

Who does the laundry?~ We both do it, although I'd say I do the most. I wash all my clothes, all the towels and linens, and both our underwear. We're both pretty particular about how are clothes are washed, though, so I generally let Aaron take care of his own these days.

Who does the dishes?~ Depends on how you define "doing the dishes." If you're talking about piling them in the sink, that would be Aaron. If you mean actually washing them and/or putting them in the dishwasher, and then drying them and putting them away, that would mostly be me. ;o)

Who sleeps on the right?~ I do. Aaron claimed the left side when we first got married, but now he's bugging me to switch with him. No can do, I'm afraid.

Who pays the bills?~ Aaron pays the utilities, I pay for groceries, and we go halfsies on the rent. It all kind of evens out.

Who mows the lawn?~ So far it's a non-issue since we live in an apartment. But when we do get a house, it'll be Aaron. I'll be in charge of mopping his brow and bringing him lemonade.

Who cooks dinner?~ Mostly me, since I'm a bit more experienced in the kitchen. Aaron does have a few specialties, though: french toast, eggs, and swedish meatballs.

Who drives when you are together?~ Usually Aaron, although his aggressive driving makes me nervous and has sparked a fight on more than one occasion.

Who is more stubborn?~ Hmm... probably me.

Who is the first to admit they're wrong?~ Aaron. He's a lot humbler than I am.

Whose parents do you see more?~ Aaron's, since they live about 40 minutes away from us.

Who has more siblings?~ We each have two.

Who wears the pants in the family?~ Aaron may or may not wear the pants, but I definitely wear the tiara.

Who eats more sweets?~ Aaron eats his share of junk, but I think I have the lion's share of the sweet tooth between the two of us. Although I think I'm converting him.

Guilty pleasures?~ Ice cream. A half-gallon container never lasts more than a couple days at our place. It's embarrassing, really.

How did you meet?~ LDSmingle.com

Who asked who out first?~ Um... yeah... internet dating doesn't really work like that, at least when you're living in different states.

Who kissed who first?~ Aaron kissed me. I believe it was during our first visit, after he opened the gift I brought him. He leaned toward me and gave me a peck on the lips.

Who proposed?~ Aaron proposed to me on the banks of the Potomac River at the LadyBird Johnson Park in Washington DC, and then we went to dinner.

Best feature?~ His strong jawline and manly hands.

Best personality trait?~ He is very loyal and loves me unconditionally, even on my worst days. And as far as I know, he never says anything negative about me behind my back.

Pet names?~ Oh, I call Aaron every name under the sun, but most commonly Love(y) and Sexpot.

Where do I see us in 15 years?~ I hope that we will be living on the west coast, with 3-4 kids, in a house that we actually own.

What is your favorite thing about him?~ I love that above all else Aaron is my best friend. And that he does almost all the vacuuming.

You Asked For It

At the behest of our good buddy Kim, we are starting a joint blog! Since all the cool kids are doing it, we thought we'd hop on the bandwagon. We're not quite sure what to post since we have no adorable photos of our children to advertise (yes, it's true--despite the many suspicious looks that are periodically shot her way, Erin is NOT pregnant and probably won't be for a while since we've been married for, like, 2 seconds), but I'm sure we'll eventually think of something, so stay tuned...
